I have listed a few routes that I composed for the cycle store I work at in Redhill, (prior to the Covid Pandemic we offered hire bikes); as such most routes start from there. I have kept the page 'live' as in reality Redhill is an excellent starting point for a ride around the "Surrey Hills area of outstanding natural beauty". Redhill train Station has a quick connection from London and for those driving it's only an 8 minute drive from junction 8 of the M25 to Gloucester Road Car Park. RH1 1BS (click for tariff), there are many alternatives but that car park has no height restriction for those who have bikes on their car roof; in addition there are plenty of quiet side roads you can use if preferred. Many of the routes include Box Hill; crowned the most popular cycling hill climb in the world; at least it is according Strava! Each route can be downloaded onto a GPS device. I use the free versions of all route planning software and where possible I have listed popular choices, Strava, Garmin Connect and Ridewithgps, regarding the latter in 2025 some features have evolved into their paid for service; as such I now prefer Alltrails. For those who want to follow the route for free on their a smartphone the GPX Viewer app is popular and has a 'free option'. Click on the GPS link to each route, Export the 'GPX file', email and download it to your phone and when you try to open it there should be a prompt to open in GPX Viewer.
Please Note all routes are intended as suggestions only, when following any course, on any gps device there are quirks and anomalies that can occur, so always have a good idea where you are going! Yes I have created these routes over roads I have ridden many times before, but I have not ridden each again just to see if the course works when uploaded onto a gps device! In fairness even I had there will probably be occasions where the course will not upload to your device exactly as created. I suggest you always have a paper back up; perhaps zoom in to the course via the links below, do a screen shot then print off section of the course you are not sure of.
At the risk of stating the obvious never blindly follow a course, it may navigate you the wrong way around a mini roundabout, take you the wrong side of a bollard, or as is commonplace on a straight road for no reason what so ever it may take you twenty yards up a side road then back again! That said like most modern tech' when it works it is indeed fabulous, but when it doesn't a GPS is just as likely to drive you round the bend instead of navigating you around it! At all times you are responsible for your own safety; if the route looks like you are about to ride off a cliff then it would be a good idea to ignore it.
When following a route on your phone using you current location over a breadcrumb trail as opposed to 'turn by turn' instructions on a GPS device make notes where the route may cross on the 'way out' and 'back' (click for an example) to make sure follow the intended route, otherwise you may find you are descending Box Hill not cycling up it for example!
Starting with the shortest and then gradually increasing in distance the routes are as follows:
Inn on the Pond and Mercers Lake 6 mile flat loop
This is a good route for new riders as a little taster to see what joys cycling can bring into your life. Much of the 6 mile circuit is on quiet roads and non technical tracks that make up part of the 'National Cycle Route 21 (NCR 21)', with a potential refreshment stop at the Inn on the Pond. Cycling doesn't have to be about pain gain and victory, mile munching for hours on end! It can be about 'chilling out', not 'working out', enjoying the countryside, the fresh air and just being outdoors; perhaps with a cheeky stop at a local 'Inn'. The feel good factor that this can bring for many can be just the tonic they need to gently cycle away the day to day stresses of our busy modern day lives, you're doing your self good on so many levels; go on, give it a try, you know it makes sense.

BoxHill 18 Miles
For those who just want to focus on the ride up 'Box Hill', then this is our shortest route from the store. We recommend the 41 mile version below but if time and distance are a consideration then this will get the job done. The 25 mile route below is on quieter roads at the start although both descend Pebble Hill Road (at 12.7 miles on this route) that needs great care and why in part we recommend 41 mile option.

BoxHill 25 Miles: This route is preferable to the 18 mile version because it is more picturesque, note we still recommend the 41 mile version. The 25 miles route still has the descent of Pebble Hill Road just before 17 miles that needs great care and why in part we recommend the longer 41 mile version.
There are plenty of options for refreshments on this ride, notably Brockham at 7.5 miles that has two pubs on the green, The Reading room Café that also has the Taphouse bar at the rear and on occasion 'Teas on the green' at the church. At 11.5 miles just off the route is Denbies vineyard, straight on at the end of Pixham Lane instead of turning right onto the cycle path, care is needed as it's a busy junction, if not visiting Denbies the route will turn right immediately before the roundabout onto the aforementioned cycle path, again care is needed at that junction. Denbies has a cafe and restaurant and is well worth visiting for those who enjoy English Wines; I confess I'm rather fond of their Surrey Gold! At the back of Denbies is Surrey Hills Brewery for real ale fans; note there is seating outside but it's not actually a pub as such, if you are looking for cheeky beer in a more traditional setting then there are some later in the ride that I have listed below.
At just over 12 miles is the Burford bridge hotel that does a lovely cream tea. Rykas is almost opposite, the latter is the 'go to' spot for motor bike riders so expect catering aimed at that clientele. Most popular of all at the top of Box Hill the National Trust has a good Café with indoor and outdoor seating plus public toilets. At 19 miles is the Dolphin pub then the Seven Stars at the end of Tapner's Rd just before 21 miles, both traditional pubs with good food, both are destination Surrey pubs so don't expect Wetherspoon prices; there is the Sun in Redhill for the fans of that chain.

Redhill-Lingfield Loop 26 miles In more ways than one this 26 mile loop provides a taster of just what 'Surrey Cycling' has to offer. A quick meander through the lanes perhaps with a cheeky stop for either a Coffee, Tea, cake, a full breakfast or lunch make the Green Rooms Cafe at Godstone the perfect refuelling stop; well worth a visit. Alternatively meander through the lanes to the Dog and Duck pub at 21 miles (note this is a few yards off the course), a favourite on the 'London To Brighton' route with lovely food at reasonable prices.

Tanhouse Farm Loop 33 miles Quiet lanes around the Surrey Sussex border with a lovely stop just past the halfway point at Tanhousefarm for coffee, cake and homemade food, very popular venue for local cyclists. There are also plenty of pubs that offer good food, notably The Plough at Rusper near the halfway point or if you would rather get more miles under your belt the at 25 miles you have the Grumpy Mole or the The Royal Oak in the pretty village of Brockam, where during th the local church often promotes 'Tea on the green', well worth a visit.

Box Hill Loop 41 miles Take in some of the beautiful lanes around Surrey before a quick zip around part of the 2012 Olympic road race cycle route over the legendary Box Hill.
There are numerous refreshment opportunities for those who want to make it a leisurely ride. At 'Brockham' just past 8 miles there are two pubs on the green, plus The Reading room Café with the Taphouse bar at the rear, on occasions there are 'Teas on the green' at the church. Just before 15 miles at the top of Box Hill the 'National Trust' have a good Café with indoor and outdoor seating plus public toilets. Just off the route is Denbies vineyard, note you pass it twice at just over 12 and 22 miles, they have a Café and restaurant and is well worth visiting for those who enjoy English Wines; I confess I'm rather fond of their Surrey Gold! At the back of Denbies is Surrey Hills Brewery for real ale fans; note there is seating outside but it's not actually a pub as such, if you are looking for cheeky beer in a more traditional setting then there are plenty more I have linked to. Just before the 13 miles is the Burford bridge hotel that does a lovely cream tea. Rykas is almost opposite, the latter is the 'go to' spot for motor bike riders so expect catering aimed at that clientele. Just before 39 miles is Redhill Aerodrome 'hangar9Café', well worth a visit as the Café overlooks the runways so there is lots to see, naturally as with Denbies makes allowances to the mileage if using a GPS as both will take you just off the route.
For those that would prefer a traditional pub that serve food there are a few, you pass very close Dorking town center at just before 12 and 23 miles that has a huge choice. Those even closer or on the actual route of note would include the two at Brockham I mentioned earlier, plus between 11 and 12 miles there is left turn into off the A25 into 'Pixham lane', instead taking that left turn continue along the A25 for about 160 meters and you have the Watermill with a lovely view from their garden of Box Hill. Just past 24 miles is The Royal Oak, the Seven Stars just after 27 1/2 miles, then the Plough at Leigh at 28 1/2 miles; all do good food although being destination Surrey pubs don't expect Wetherspoon prices; there is the Sun in Redhill for the fans of that chain.

North Downs loop 48miles
Taking in Leith Hill, Friday Street, Abinger common, Whitedown, Ranmore and Boxhill Hill this ia a true the classic of the Northdowns! Potential refreshments stops are at 12.4 miles the Crown pub at Capel. At 19.7 miles the Stephan Langton Inn, note this is just off the course, to get there, 19.7 miles is the large Mill Pond at Friday street, instead of going straight past and up the hill, take a left turn and ride along the side of pond, just past the end of which is the 'Inn'. 20.7 miles the Abinger Hatch. Along the top of Ranmore common at 25.4 there is a tea wagon that is worth a visit as you do get good views across to Leith Hill where you have just been. At 28.6 is the Burford Bridge Hotel, there is a side entrance, take the bikes in there and if you are feeling indulgent they do a lovely cream tea; Paul has indulged quite a few times. If you would rather get to the top of Box Hill at 30.1miles is their Café, very very popular in the summer months. Alternatively if you would like a 'nearly finished' celebration, at 45.1 miles turn right up "Bonnys Rd" to the Skimmington Castle

Sussex loop 55 miles Longer than the box hill loop yet not as hilly, over pretty and often very quiet Surrey lanes before swooping into Sussex. There are also quite a few pub stops, like the Victory Inn and Jolly Tanners, both at the 25 1/2 mile mark near Staplefield or a little further just before the 36mile mark at Lambs Green is the aptly named Lamb Inn, There is also a lovely tea room at Tanhousefarm at 39 1/2 miles for coffee, cake and homemade food; very popular venue for local cyclists. This route offers the variety of small country lanes as well as the wide open space around plummer plain midway through the course; one of our favourites loops that showcases both counties beautifully.

TONBRIDGE LOOP 57 MILES: The route also takes you past Chartwell, the home of Sir Winston Churchill. There are quite a few pubs that serve good food such as the The Cock inn at Ide Hill at 35 miles or much nearer the finish after most of the climbing is completed and with just over five miles to go is the Whyte Harte at Bletchingley. This is quite a challenging course, but is well worth the effort.

Leith Hill Octopus 65 miles: 8 legs through the leafy lanes of Leith Hill each leg taking a each taking a different route up Leith Hill. Plenty of opportunities to stop for refreshments. This route starts from Dorking station but there are plenty of parking opportunities elsewhere; many use Denbies wine estate car park which is close to the station (click), as they have a Café to reward yourself with a treat after your ride; their wine is very good, I can personally recommend Surrey Gold!

Brighton and back loop 88 miles The route to the coast is over the famous 'London to Brighton' route, for those who may not want to ride back there are regular trains to Redhill from Brighton. For those cycling back the route is on much quieter roads, this really is a superb ride that we have done many times.
